Nobody wants a grinder. What you want is a slab that will hold the coating you are about to put on it, and the grinder is just the tool that gets you there. That distinction matters because it changes what a good rental looks like. A yard hands you whatever walk-behind is on the lot with whatever segments were on it when the last guy brought it back, and if those segments are wrong for your concrete you will spend a full day making dust and end up with a floor that still is not open.
What we set up instead is a machine configured for the concrete you described on the phone, aimed at a specific surface profile, with the extraction to pull the dust out of the air while you do it. The target for most resinous coatings sits in the CSP 2 to CSP 3 range, which in plain terms means the slab should feel like medium sandpaper and show open pores across the whole area rather than only in the spots you leaned on.

How a Manteca prep day actually runs.
Tell us what the slab is
Age, hardness if you know it, and what is currently stuck to it. Bare broom finish, old sealer, glue residue, a previous coating that is lifting, and a power-troweled slab that has been burnished hard all want different segments. Square footage tells us machine size. This is a five-minute call and it decides most of the day.
Pick it up in Tracy
The machine goes out staged and tested with the diamonds already fitted, the extractor, hoses, cords and shrouds. It is roughly twelve road miles from the bench out to Manteca, so most crews swing through in the morning on the way to the job rather than burning a separate trip the night before.
Read the dust while you cut
Fine powder that keeps coming means the segments are cutting. Coarse grit that stops means you are on harder concrete than the bond expects and the diamonds are glazing over. Nothing coming out at all and the machine skating means the bond is too hard for the slab. Call the bench if it changes on you mid-run; we have seen it.
Check the profile before you quit
Vacuum a section clean and look at it in raking light. Open pores everywhere, an even scratch pattern, no glossy islands where the trowel burnished it hardest. Glossy islands mean another pass. That check costs you ten minutes and saves a whole floor.
Bring it back and pick up the material
Drop the machine and the segments, and if the coating is coming off our shelf we will have it staged for the same trip. Grind one day, pour the next, one round trip out to the bench instead of three.

Segment choice is where most rentals go sideways.
Diamond segments are held in a metal bond, and that bond has to be softer than the material it is cutting so it wears away and keeps exposing fresh diamond. Put a hard bond on soft concrete and the diamonds polish over and stop cutting. Put a soft bond on a hard power-troweled slab and you burn through expensive tooling in an afternoon. Both mistakes feel identical from behind the handles: the machine is running, dust is not coming, and you are losing the day.
So we fit the bond to your concrete, not to the calendar. If the slab turns out harder or softer than you described when you get on it, that is normal, and it is a phone call rather than a wasted day. Segments are billed by wear and we show you how to read them before you leave, so you know what you used and why.
The rest of the prep list is easy to forget until you are standing on bare concrete without it. Crack chase blades, patch material, hand tooling for the edges the planetary cannot reach, and vacuum bags. Most of that lives on the tooling and prep shelf and goes out with the machine.

when to rent, when not to

We rent the machine and we would still rather you call somebody else on certain floors. A slab with a real moisture problem is one of them. Grinding it does not fix the vapor coming up from underneath, and a coating over it will bubble no matter how clean the profile looks. Test first; if the numbers are bad the answer is a moisture barrier in the system, not more grinding.
The other one is a big commercial floor with a hard coating already on it, where removal is most of the labor. That is a different machine, a different pace, and a job where a crew who does it every week finishes in a day and a half while a rental turns it into a week. We will tell you that on the phone rather than take the rental and watch it go badly.

How far ahead should I reserve for a Manteca job?

It does, and you should use it. Dry grinding without extraction fills a garage with silica dust in minutes and leaves a mess that gets into the coating later. The extractor, hoses and shrouds go out with the machine.
Do you deliver the grinder to Manteca?
