Quartz gets called the boring system, usually by installers who have never bid a natatorium or a hospital kitchen. It is the system that wins the jobs nobody else can hold, and it wins them because a facility with drains in the floor and a health inspector on the calendar has a different set of problems than a homeowner with a garage.
If you are moving from residential decorative work into pool decks, locker rooms, commissary kitchens, restrooms, and animal care floors, quartz is the product line that gets you there. Here is what it is, why it beats the thing most crews try first, and the four details that decide whether the floor lasts eight years or gets torn out in eighteen months.
Colored quartz in a clear binder, and why sand in gray paint loses
Quartz broadcast media is kiln-fired, ceramic-coated silica. The color is fused to the grain and fired on, so the grain is the color all the way around, and it stays that color under abrasion and under bleach and under whatever the janitorial contractor actually buys instead of what the spec said.
The system logic follows from that. You broadcast colored grain into a clear or lightly tinted binder, then grout-coat over the top with clear resin. The color you see is the aggregate, viewed through resin. Nothing on that floor is a pigmented film that can wear through to a different color underneath.
Compare that to the thing crews reach for when a customer says they need texture: a pigmented epoxy with silica sand broadcast into it, topcoated with more pigmented epoxy. It looks fine on day one. Then traffic wears the topcoat at the door, the doorway goes a shade lighter than the field, and now you are looking at a floor with a visible traffic pattern that no amount of scrubbing removes. Worse, the sand under a pigmented film is a different color than the film, so any chip or gouge shows a white speckle. On a quartz floor a gouge exposes more quartz, which is the same color as the rest of the floor.
Then there is the wear depth. A decorative flake or solid color floor gives you a film measured in a few dry mils. A double broadcast quartz system gives you a monolithic layer that is roughly an eighth of an inch thick and is mostly ceramic aggregate, which is far harder than any resin. You are not protecting a coating anymore. You are wearing into a matrix. That is the entire argument for putting quartz under a commercial kitchen line where a two hundred pound speed rack gets dragged across the same eight feet of floor four times a day.
The trade is honest and worth stating to a customer up front: quartz costs more in material, costs more in labor, and has a limited color vocabulary compared to what you can do with pigment. What you get back is a floor that looks the same in year six as it did at handover. Our stocked blends and binders live on the quartz broadcast page.
Building the double broadcast, coat by coat
The single broadcast version exists and it has a place on a light duty floor. In wet and hygiene critical space, double is the standard and you should quote it that way.
The stack, from the concrete up, runs like this. Primer, chosen for the slab you tested and not out of habit. Then the body coat, a resin applied at a real film thickness rather than a wetting coat, into which you throw quartz until the surface refuses it. Then the first grout coat, which locks that grain down and fills roughly half the voids. Then a second broadcast into that grout coat, again to refusal. Then a second grout coat that fills the remaining voids and establishes the surface plane. Then, depending on the space and the chemical exposure, a topcoat.
The reason for two rounds instead of one heavy one is void filling. A single broadcast leaves a grain matrix with open interstitial space, and one grout coat over it either starves and leaves the tops of grains exposed as an open, dirt-holding surface, or floods and pools in low spots. Two rounds of broadcast and grout build the matrix in layers, so the second round is filling a much smaller volume and you get an even plane you can actually control.
Throw technique matters more here than it does on flake, because quartz is heavy and it does not float. Grain hitting wet resin sinks, and it sinks where it lands. Throw high and let it rain down rather than casting flat, work backward out of your own broadcast so you are never standing on seated grain, and keep the throw rate consistent across the floor. A section that got thrown light looks different, and worse than that, it has less aggregate carrying the load. That is where the floor opens up first.
Between rounds, scrape and vacuum thoroughly. Loose grain sitting on top of a cured grout coat will not bond into the next coat. It gets pushed around by the squeegee and it ends up as debris trapped mid-film. Sharp blade, two directions, vacuum, and then run your hand over it before you pour anything.
Slip resistance is a spec number, not an opinion
Here is where quartz work separates from residential decorative work in a way that catches people. On a garage floor, slip resistance is a preference. On a pool deck or a commercial kitchen, it is a number in a specification and somebody may eventually measure it in a deposition.
The good news is that quartz gives you two independent dials to tune it with, and neither one requires you to guess.
The first dial is broadcast rejection. A floor broadcast to genuine refusal has more exposed grain relief than a floor broadcast lighter, and the surface texture you can feel with a bare foot is largely a function of how much grain is standing proud of the grout plane. Broadcast heavy and grout light, you get an aggressive surface. Broadcast heavy and grout to a full plane, you get a smoother one. Same material, materially different floor.
The second dial is the topcoat. A clear topcoat applied over a filled quartz surface will fill and smooth the microtexture, which is exactly what you want in a restroom where the priority is cleanability and the floor stays mostly dry. A topcoat carrying an aggregate additive puts the texture back and then some, which is what a pool deck or a wash-down kitchen needs. You can spec the same base system across a whole facility and change the topcoat room by room, and that is a genuinely powerful thing to be able to offer a facility manager.
Be specific with them, and be specific in writing. A kitchen back of house behind the line, where there is grease and standing water, wants aggressive. A dining room floor in the same building wants smooth and cleanable. If you texture the dining room to kitchen standards, the mop stops working and they will call you about it. If you smooth the kitchen to dining room standards, somebody goes down. Ask which rooms are which before you order topcoat, and write the room list into the proposal.
Cove base and drains: the two details that decide the job
You can pour a flawless field and lose the job at the perimeter and the drains. In a hygiene critical space these are not finishing touches. They are the whole reason the customer is buying a resinous floor instead of tile.
Integral cove base means the flooring turns up the wall in a radius, typically four to six inches, with no seam at the floor to wall junction. That radius is what lets a hose or a squeegee actually clear the corner. A hard ninety degree joint holds water and soil no matter how hard anybody scrubs, and it is the first place a health inspector puts a flashlight.
Build the cove first, before the field. Set a cove of resin mortar or a filled cove compound, get the radius consistent, let it cure, then bring the field system up onto it. Broadcasting quartz onto a vertical surface is its own skill and it does not work like broadcasting a floor: gravity is not helping you, and grain that does not seat immediately falls. Most crews hand-apply the vertical broadcast in sections while the resin is genuinely wet, working small areas at a time. Practice this on a mock-up before you do it in a customer’s kitchen. It is one of the things we cover in the training academy because watching it once saves a lot of scraping.
Drains are the other one. Every floor drain and every trench drain in that space needs the coating terminated into it correctly, which means keying the system into the drain body so water running into the drain hits resin all the way to the metal with no lip and no gap. A coating that stops an inch short of a drain flange creates a rim of exposed concrete that stays wet permanently, and that is where delamination starts and where the smell comes from.
Check slope while you are down there. A lot of older kitchens and locker rooms have slabs that do not actually fall to the drains, and the customer has been living with a puddle for years. Resin is not going to fix that on its own. Where the slope is genuinely wrong, the answer is a mortar that can be built to grade before the quartz goes down, which is what urethane cement mortar is for. It also handles thermal shock from steam cleaning and boiling spillage in a way a straight epoxy body coat does not, which is why so many kitchen specs call for it as the base layer with quartz broadcast into the system above.
What the facility manager is actually buying
Installers sell texture and durability. Facility managers buy labor hours and inspection outcomes. If you learn to talk in their terms, you win bids over people who quote a lower number.
A quartz floor with integral cove runs unbroken from wall to wall with no grout lines in it. That is the single sentence that closes kitchens. Tile grout in a commercial kitchen is a permanent maintenance problem: it is porous, it holds grease and biological soil, it needs periodic regrouting, and it is what fails first in an inspection. Removing the grout lines removes a recurring line item from their budget and a recurring risk from their inspection.
Chemical tolerance matters to them in specific ways. Ask what they clean with, actually ask, and get the product names. Quaternary ammonium sanitizers, peracetic acid, chlorinated degreasers, and enzymatic drain treatments all behave differently against different topcoat chemistries. A customer whose crew uses an aggressive chlorinated degreaser nightly is a customer who needs a chemically appropriate topcoat, and specifying the wrong one is a callback you cannot argue your way out of.
Downtime is often the deciding factor, especially in food service and healthcare, where the floor cannot be out of commission across a normal work week. Quartz systems have real cure schedules and you should be honest about them rather than optimistic, because a facility that reopens on your floor before it is ready will damage it and then blame the product. Where the schedule is genuinely tight, there are faster chemistries available in the grout and topcoat layers, and that conversation is worth having during the bid rather than at three in the morning on install night.
Then there is the practical one nobody puts in a spec: quartz hides soil between cleanings better than a solid color, because the eye reads a speckled surface as uniform. A solid gray floor shows every scuff and every drip. The same traffic on a mid-tone quartz blend reads as clean. That is worth mentioning on a walkthrough, because it is the thing they will notice every single day.
The four mistakes that put quartz floors back on the grinder
These come up on the phone often enough that we can usually diagnose a failed quartz floor in about two questions.
- The starved grout coat. By far the most common. Somebody grout-coats a full quartz broadcast at the coverage rate printed for a smooth surface, and the resin disappears into the void space without ever filling it. The floor cures with grain tips exposed, feels like sandpaper, holds soil in every interstitial gap, and cleans terribly. Then somebody tries to fix it with a topcoat, which also gets absorbed, and the money is gone twice. A broadcast surface has enormous area. Calculate grout coat material against the void volume you actually created, expect to use substantially more than the smooth-surface rate, and mix the next batch before you need it.
- Broadcasting into a gelling binder. Quartz is heavy. It needs the resin to be genuinely liquid to seat and wet out, and the working window on a wet body coat is shorter than most crews plan for, especially in a hot building or on a warm slab. Once the binder starts to gel, grain sits on top instead of settling in, and it looks fine until you scrape and half of it comes off in a sheet. Mix in smaller batches, keep the broadcast right behind the pour rather than doing a whole room and then throwing, and add a body on the crew instead of trying to move faster with the crew you have.
- Skipping the scrape between rounds. Loose grain that did not seat in round one becomes debris in round two. It will not bond, it moves under the squeegee, and it shows up as gritty patches and as haze in the finished plane. The scrape and vacuum between coats is not optional on a double broadcast.
- Treating a wet area like a garage on prep. Wet space floors have chemical history, drain history, and often a slab that has been damp for years. Test it, and prep it to what the primer data sheet asks for rather than to what you usually do. A quartz system is a heavy, expensive, rigid thing to put on top of a bond you did not verify.
Where quartz stops being the right answer
Being straight about this makes you money, because the job you decline correctly is the callback you never get.
Quartz is not a decorative statement floor. If a customer wants depth and movement and a floor that reads as art, quartz will disappoint them, and a metallic will not. Do not sell quartz to somebody who showed you a picture of a swirled floor.
Quartz is also a poor fit where budget is genuinely the constraint and the space is not wet or hygiene regulated. A well-executed full flake floor in a warehouse break room does the job at a lower installed cost, and it is not a downgrade for that application. Save quartz for where the specific properties earn the money.
And quartz on a slab with a real moisture problem is the same mistake as any other system on a slab with a real moisture problem, except more expensive to remove. Heavy, rigid, well-bonded systems do not tolerate vapor drive any better than thin ones. If the numbers say you need a barrier, you need a barrier under the quartz.
What crews call us about before their first quartz job
Q. How much quartz should I order per square foot? More than you would expect, and the honest planning number depends on the grain size and whether you are doing single or double broadcast. Double broadcast to refusal uses a large volume of aggregate and a real percentage of what you throw is overspray that gets swept up. Give us the square footage, the grain, and the number of rounds, and we will work the quantity with you rather than rounding up on you. Running short mid-broadcast is a genuine disaster on this system because you cannot pause.
Q. Can I get away with a single broadcast in a restroom? Sometimes, and it depends on the traffic and the maintenance regime rather than on the room type. A low-traffic restroom in an office building with a nightly mop is a reasonable single broadcast candidate. A restroom in a stadium or a school gets abuse that argues for double. When in doubt, look at what happens to that floor on the busiest day of its year, not on an average Tuesday.
Q. Do I need a topcoat over the second grout coat? Not always, and this surprises people. A well-filled second grout coat is a finished surface and plenty of quartz floors run without an additional topcoat. You add one when you need specific chemical resistance the grout resin does not provide, when you need UV stability in a daylit space, or when you are tuning slip resistance with an aggregate additive. Q. My quartz floor came out gritty and will not clean. What happened? Almost certainly a starved grout coat, and it is fixable if you catch it. The repair is a scrub, a thorough vacuum, and an additional grout coat applied generously enough to actually fill the void space this time, then evaluated by hand before anybody signs off. Where grain has already come loose from an unfilled matrix, that area needs grinding back and rebuilding. Call before you do anything, because the wrong fix here compounds fast.
Q. Will a pool deck quartz floor get hot in the sun? Less than a dark solid color coating, because a light quartz blend reflects considerably more, and this is a real consideration in the Central Valley where deck temperature in July decides whether anybody walks on it barefoot. Specify a lighter blend on any exterior deck and be honest with the customer that a dark floor outdoors is going to be uncomfortable regardless of what it is made of.
