Summer in the valley changes the clock on every coat you put down. The air in a Lodi garage can feel manageable at noon while the slab under it, warmed by a morning of sun through the open door, runs hotter than the data sheet ever assumed. Resin reacts to the surface it sits on. Working time shortens and recoat windows shift, and a pour planned around the air reading can go wrong halfway across the room. Plan the day around the slab instead, and around the dew point waiting at the other end of it.

Read the slab, then read the air
An infrared thermometer is the cheapest tool on a coating job and one of the most useful. Point it at the floor in several spots before you mix anything: near the door, in the middle, along the back wall, and anywhere sun lands through a window. A garage slab is rarely one temperature.
The air thermometer tells you how the crew will feel. The slab reading tells you how the resin will behave. When the two disagree, trust the slab, because a thin film of product takes on the temperature of the surface under it within minutes.
Write the readings down with the time of day. Take them again when the first batch goes down, then at each recoat. A floor that read cool first thing can climb as the sun moves across the doorway, and the numbers on your sheet show that trend before the roller does. Most data sheets print a minimum and a maximum surface temperature for application. Hold the job to that range, and when the slab sits outside it, wait.
Dew point sets the other edge of the window
Heat shortens the work. Moisture from the air damages the finish in another way. When the slab surface drops close to the dew point, water can condense on it in a film too thin to see, and resin laid over that film can blush, cloud or lose its grip on the next coat.
In the valley this tends to show up at the ends of the day. A slab that cools quickly after sunset is one case. An early start on a floor that has not warmed yet is another. Pull a dew point reading from a hygrometer or a weather app, compare it with the slab, and look up the margin your data sheet asks for. Keep the surface comfortably above that line through application and into the early cure.
That margin is also why a topcoat rolled late in the day to save a trip can bite back. The floor looks fine at dark and shows a haze at sunrise, and by then the only fix is sanding it back.

What a hot afternoon does to working time
Working time on the floor is separate from how long the product lasts in the bucket, and heat cuts into both. Once resin is spread, a warm slab speeds the reaction in that thin layer. Squeegee lines stop leveling sooner. A broadcast has less time to land in wet material, and a back roll that would have blended easily in the morning leaves a visible edge by mid afternoon.
On a hot slab the crew covers less floor per batch and moves faster between batches. Keep the next kit staged before the last one runs dry. If sun comes through the open door onto one side of the garage, that side will set up ahead of the shaded side, and the pour plan has to account for it.
Some installers shade the door opening, or hold the resin until the sun is off the driveway. Others save their coolest hours for the coat that needs the longest open time, usually the broadcast base, and leave the quicker step for later. Either choice works. Pretending the afternoon will behave like the morning does not.
Recoat windows move when the slab runs hot
The recoat window on a data sheet has two ends. Coat too soon and the new layer can wrinkle or soften what is underneath. Wait too long and the earlier coat cures past the point where the next one bonds chemically, which leaves you scuffing and cleaning before you can continue.
Heat pulls both ends earlier. The first coat is ready sooner, and it can close its window sooner as well. On a hot slab, a crew that plans to topcoat the next morning may find the base has gone past its window overnight. A cold garage does the reverse, and the base is still soft when the schedule says go.
Test the floor instead of trusting the clock. Press a thumbnail into the coating in an out of the way corner, and check the sheet for its own signs of readiness. Planning the pour sequence around the heat
Put the day on paper before anyone mixes. Start with slab readings taken the day before at the same hours, the dew point forecast, and the recoat window for each coat at the temperatures you expect.
Then set the coats against the clock. Give the coat that needs the most open time the coolest part of the day. Work from the sunny side toward the shade, and finish at the threshold so nobody is trapped in a back corner. Break a big floor into sections one batch can cover while the edge is still wet, and mark those sections with tape on the wall.
A fast topcoat tightens all of this. Build a stop point into the plan too, a joint or a wall where the crew can pause if the slab climbs past the range on the sheet.

Should I go by the air temperature or the slab temperature?
Go by the slab. Resin spread thin takes on the temperature of the surface under it, so a cool garage over a sun-warmed floor still behaves like a hot job. Take infrared readings in several spots before mixing and at every recoat, and hold the work to the surface range printed on the data sheet. Write the time next to every reading.
What happens if I miss the recoat window?
The next coat may not bond chemically to the one below it. Most data sheets describe a prep step to bring an overcured coat back, usually a scuff sand and a clean before the next layer goes on. Read that section before the job starts, and in hot weather check the base early, because the window can close sooner than the schedule assumed.
Is it safe to roll a topcoat late in the afternoon?
It can be, if the slab stays inside the temperature range on the sheet and well above the dew point until the coat has set. The risk in the valley is a floor that cools fast at dusk and pulls moisture onto a fresh surface, leaving haze or blush by morning. Check the forecast dew point before you commit to a late coat.
